A Unique Volunteer Experience

Teen Advisors participate in an extensive training and commit to two shifts per month for one year.

Teens in High School are invited to apply to become a volunteer with the Teen Talk App. Teen Advisors complete their volunteer experience remotely, allowing them the flexibility to make a difference volunteering while still managing their other commitments.

Teens are always supervised and supported by professional clinicians while acting as a teen advisor on the app.

Comprehensive Training

With a focus on understanding values and bias, the Teen Talk App training exposes teens to the variety of experiences they will encounter on the app. Teens learn reflective communication skills, crisis intervention and how to recognize the signs of mental health struggles. Teen Advisors are trained to provide a nonjudgmental space for teens to vent and feel seen by their peers.

Teen Advisors learn coping skills throughout their training to support users as well as to utilize in their own lives. Through the Teen Talk App training, volunteers are empowered to become mental health ambassadors off the app as well. Teen advisors often become leaders in spreading awareness and support within their schools, families and communities.

Participate in Upcoming Training Programs

We are excited to announce that the Teen Talk App training program is now available nationwide!

To become a trained teen, teens must complete an application form and, if selected, participate in an interview. If selected for training, teens will participate in a live, virtual training (on Zoom) with a group of other teens who want to make a difference. Training covers mental health basics, crisis intervention, reflective communication, and self-care. Please review the below training options to see which one works best for you!

The 20-hour training is an abbreviated version of the 40-hour training. This means that teens who participate in the 20-hour training will be trained to support teens with some of the most common topics on the app, such as relationships, family, school stress, and friendships. Those who complete the 40-hour training, will have the knowledge to handle relationship posts as well as the more serious posts that we see which relate to self-harm, abuse, suicidal ideation, etc. Teens who participate in the 20-hour training will have the option to get additional training throughout the year if they’d like to handle more of the crisis posts.

Please note, a 20-hour training option will NOT be offered in Fall 2023.
